Helpful Hints for using Yahoo! Examples using Yahoo!
Phrase Searching EXAMPLES
Enclose words as a phrase within quotes. "National Honor Society"
"William J. Clinton"

Requires all the words and characters to be retrieved exactly as keyed, in the same order.
Truncation EXAMPLES
Right-hand truncation with * as "wildcard character bask*
retrieves basket, basketball, baskets, etc
+ (Require Term) or - (Exclude Term) EXAMPLES
+ immediately before a word or phrase in
" " requires the term to be present in documents.
+ before more than one term requires them all to be present
Equivalent to Boolean AND.
+"basket weaving"
requires the phrase to be in documents or categories retrieved.
+computer +program
retrieves documents or categories with both terms.
If you do not specify + to require a term nor - to exclude a term, the default is to retrieve documents with either term or both.
Equivalent of Boolean OR.
+"basket weaving" craft hobby
requires the phrase "basket weaving" and will accept documents containing any or all of the terms "craft" or "hobby".
- immediately before a word or phrase in
" " excludes documents containing the term(s).
Use after at least one other term that is not excluded (you may not do a sub-search containing only - terms).
basket weav* +straw* -Arizona*
excludes terms containing "Arizona" from results in which "straw" is required along with either "basket" or "weaving, weaver," etc.
Search Title (t:) or URL(u:) EXAMPLES
t:
requires word or phrase to be in title field.
t:diversity
t:"baskets weaving"
These retrieve documents with the term "diversity" or the phrase "baskets weaving" in their titles.
u:
requires characters to be in the URL or address of a site.
u:berkeley.edu
retrieves records with "berkeley.edu" in their URLs.
Case INSenSiTiviTY EXAMPLES
Capital letters are ignored. You may key them if you wish. National Airport
also retrieves "national airport"
Category Searching EXAMPLES
After inputting a search argument, choose to search only within the category, as opposed to all of Yahoo! If you get too many results from a search on K-12 Education,
Select "search with K-12 Education" and add another term, such as mathematics
