Files

With Windows 95, you store your work in files. For example, your word processing documents will be stored in files. A file name you might choose is lesson1. Microsoft WORD, the word processing program, attaches an extension on your filename automatically. This extension is .doc. Therefore, your complete filename would be lesson1.doc. This filename tells Windows 95 that your file is called lesson1 and it should be opened using the word-processing program, WORD.

Another example is a file containing your spreadsheet. You might name this file grades. Microsoft EXCEL, the spreadsheet program, will attach an extension of .xls on your filename automatically. Therefore, your complete filename would be grades.xls. This filename tells Windows 95 that your file is called grades and it should be opened using the spreadsheet program, EXCEL.

With Windows 95 you are not limited to 8 character filenames as you were with previous versions of Windows.
