Technology in Education II - EDU 508 - Course Outline

Outline

Strand 1:
Technology Outcomes and Online Resources
Technology Outcomes, Michigan Curriculum Framework, Michigan Statewide Technology Plan (1998), the Michigan Department of Education web site, the statewide technology projects supported by the Technology Literacy Grant program and the Michigan Department of Education, the Dialogue Web Project and the instructional web site of the Technology Training Team. a. These statewide projects will be presented in a coordinated way to show how each project interacts with and supports the other projects to assist educators in their efforts to improve education through the use of technology.
b. Current topics
c. Project- Identify how each of the projects introduced in this module can assist you in your educational activities. Also, identify ways in which you can be assisted that are not currently a part of any of the projects named in this module.

Strand 2:
Technology Tools
a. Use digital cameras (still pictures and movies), virtual realty movies, scanners, etc
b. Use graphics software
c. Integrate technology tools with other applications
d. Current topics
e. Projects- Develop a portfolio of still and motion pictures to be used throughout the course.

Strand 3:
WINDOWS 98/2000/XP, Word-processing and Desktop Publishing
a. Integrate Word with other applications
b. Use Mail Merge
c. Use WordArt, columns, drawn objects, and advanced desktop publishing activities
d. Current topics
e. Projects- Develop projects that 1) use the Mail Merge function of Word, 2) involve publishing classroom or school activities in a news release format with columns, graphics and pictures.

Strand 4:
Excel - Spreadsheet applications
a. Change formatting of spreadsheets
b. Use advanced Formulae and Functions
c. Create graphs and charts
d. Integrate Excel with other applications
e. Current topics
f. Project- Develop a project that integrates Word and Excel.

Strand 5:
Access - Database applications
a. Develop tables, forms, and reports
b. Create Menu-driven Application
c. Integrate Access with other applications
d. Current topics
e. Project- Develop an Access database that you can use in the classroom or school environment. Also, develop a project that integrates an Access database with a Word document and an Excel spreadsheet.

Strand 6:
PowerPoint - Presentation graphics including multimedia
a. Use advanced features of PowerPoint
b. Create Graphs, Charts, Pictures, Movies and Sound
c. Integrate PowerPoint with other applications
d. Current topics
e. Project- Develop a presentation for your classroom or school that incorporates all of the advanced features of PowerPoint including graphs, charts, pictures, movies, sound and animation.

Strand 7:
Internet - Efficient, effective educational use of the Internet
a. Use a Web browser and the World Wide Web
b. Share useful educational web sites
c. Build and Link Web Pages, Part I, including: text, lists, and links
d. Build and Link Web Pages, Part II, including graphics, color, tables, frames
e. Integrate the Internet with other applications
f. Current topics
g. Project- Develop a web site for your classroom or school that incorporates graphics, tables, frames and links to educational resources.
Strand 8:
Microsoft Publisher
a. Develop a sample web site using Publisher
b. Develop a sample classroom or school newsletter
c. Integration with other applications
d. Current topics
e. Project- Develop projects to produce 1) a school newspaper and 2) a school web site.

Strand 9:
Distance Education and Communication Techniques and Presentations
a. Use hardware associated with interactive television
b. Use methodologies for effective distance education presentations and communication
c. Integrate distance education activities with other applications
d. Current topics
e. Use online communication techniques such as forums, chat and audio and video conferencing
f. Project- Develop an interactive project to present to course participants.
